"Talking to Myself" is a song by American band Linkin Park from the their seventh studio album One More Light. Before Chester Bennington's death was announced, the song was planned to be released as a single on July 25, 2017[1]. A music video for the song was released on July 20. It is Linkin Park's first single ever to be released without Bennington in the band.

Background[]

On March 15, 2016, Andrew Jackson worked with Linkin Park in the studio.[2] He had returned to the studio with them in June of that year.[3] He was a co-producer for "Talking to Myself" and recorded additional guitar for the song.

Lyrics[]

The lyrics are inspired by Chester's wife and how she probably felt witnessing her then-husband battling out his demons.[4]

Production[]

The sound of the drums in "Talking to Myself" were "a very delicate blend" of live and sampled sounds featured under the kick and snare. Mike originally had a drum sound that "was a little bit grimier and raw" before Manny Marroquin polished the sound and made the drums more defined.[5]

Lyric video[]

The lyric video for "Talking to Myself" was planned to be released after its music video counterpart.[6] Due to Chester's death, the video's release wouldn't see the light of day until the near-beginning of August on Vevo. However, the video was deleted almost two weeks later due to fans spreading news about the release.[7] The video would be released once again, this time on the band's official YouTube channel, on December 21, 2017.[8]

The video features footage spanning across multiple tours from 2013-2017.[7]

Music video[]

The music video for "Talking to Myself" was released on July 20, 2017, and features footage from the One More Light era including live performances, photo shoots, rehearsals, and more.[9] The video was released merely hours before Chester was found dead.[10]

Live performances[]

"Talking to Myself" was first performed on March 6, 2017[11], and last performed on October 27, 2017 at Chester's memorial show. Ilsey Juber was a featured guest at the concert. The performance had an extended bridge with a cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".[12]

Brad recounted the second time the band had played "Talking to Myself," saying that the overwhelmingly positive crowd response made him forget how to play the song.[13]

  • Brad Delson – guitar, backing vocals, producer, writer

Lyrics[]

 Chester

Tell me what I've gotta do
There's no getting through to you
The lights are on but nobody's home (nobody's home)
You say I can't understand
But you're not giving me a chance
When you leave me, where do you go? (Where do you go?)

All the walls that you keep building
All this time that I spent chasing
All the ways that I keep losing you

The truth is, you turn into someone else
You keep running like the sky is falling
I can whisper, I can yell
But I know, yeah I know, yeah I know
I'm just talking to myself
Talking to myself
Talking to myself
But I know, yeah I know, yeah I know
I'm just talking to myself

I admit I made mistakes
But yours might cost you everything
Can't you hear me calling you home?

All the walls that you keep building
All this time that I spent chasing
All the ways that I keep losing you

The truth is, you turn into someone else
You keep running like the sky is falling
I can whisper, I can yell
But I know, yeah I know, yeah I know
I'm just talking to myself
Talking to myself
Talking to myself
But I know, yeah I know, yeah I know
I'm just talking to myself

All the walls that you keep building
All this time that I spent chasing
All the ways that I keep losing you

The truth is, you turn into someone else
You keep running like the sky is falling
I can whisper, I can yell
But I know, yeah I know, yeah I know
I'm just talking to myself
Talking to myself
Talking to myself
But I know, yeah I know, yeah I know
I'm talking to myself
