Given Up is the second track and fourth single from Linkin Park's third studio album Minutes to Midnight, and is also the fastest track on the record.
Given Up, along with, What I've Done and No More Sorrow made its live debut on April 28, 2007 in Berlin, Germany. Live performances of these three songs at the AOL sessions were released on AOL on May 5, 2007. The performance of the song is available on the Bleed It Out CD single. They also play in the background on the band's official website.[1]
This is one of the heaviest songs from the album, (along with "No More Sorrow") and is notable for lead singer, Chester Bennington, screaming for approximately 17 consecutive seconds near the end of the track during the heavy metal-styled breakdown, which he is also able to replicate during live performances. It has a distinctive jingle sound during the verses and intro, that was revealed on the album DVD to be made by Brad Delson shaking his car keys with Mike Shinoda clapping.
This is the first song on a Linkin Park studio album to contain profanity.
In Live performances, the 17 second scream was only ever done all the way through times, the first time at AOL sessions, the second time at the very first show of Projekt Revolution in Auburn, the third time during Projekt Revolution in San Antonio, and the fourth their Australian tour in Melbourne.
Its working title was 21 Stitches.
Lyrics
Wake in a sweat again
Another day's been laid to waste
In my disgrace
Stuck in my head again
Feels like I'll never leave this place
There's no escape
I'm my own worst enemy
I've given up, I'm sick of feeling
Is there nothing you can say?
Take this all away, I'm suffocating
Tell me what the fuck is wrong with me
I don't know what to take
Thought I was focused, but I'm scared
I'm not prepared
I hyperventilate
Looking for help, somehow, somewhere
And no one cares
I'm my own worst enemy
I've given up, I'm sick of feeling
Is there nothing you can say?
Take this all away, I'm suffocating
Tell me what the fuck is wrong with me
Put me out of my misery!
Put me out of my misery!
Put me out of my
Put me out of my fucking misery!
I've given up, I'm sick of feeling
Is there nothing you can say?
Take this all away, I'm suffocating
Tell me what the fuck is wrong with me
