Linkin Park Wiki

Bradford Phillip Delson (born December 1, 1977, in Agoura, California[1]) is the lead guitarist for the band Linkin Park and serves as the A&R for Machine Shop Recordings. A founding member of the band, Delson has been instrumental in developing Linkin Park's signature sound through his distinctive guitar work and understated playing style.

Biography[]

Delson grew up in Agoura, California, and graduated from Agoura High School in 1995. Along with childhood friend Mike Shinoda, he formed the band Xero—an early project that eventually evolved into Linkin Park. Delson attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a degree in communications before committing full-time to the band.

During his college years, Delson shared a room with Dave Farrell and interned for Jeff Blue, an A&R representative at Warner Bros. Records. This early industry experience, combined with his roles in other bands such as the Pricks and Relative Degree, helped lay the foundation for his influential contributions to Linkin Park.

Live Performance Update[]

In 2024, Linkin Park restructured their touring lineup. While Delson remains the creative force behind the band's studio recordings, he has stepped back from live performances. His live performance duties have been assumed by Alex Feder, a dynamic guitarist known for his energetic stage presence. Feder's appointment allows Delson to concentrate on studio production while ensuring that Linkin Park’s live shows continue to deliver high-energy performances.[2]

Guitar Playing Style[]

Delson is celebrated for his melodic and textural guitar work. Rather than showcasing flashy solos, he focuses on crafting intricate layers and interplay with the rhythm section—an approach that has become integral to Linkin Park’s atmospheric sound. His playing has evolved over the years, with notable contributions on albums such as Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns. Delson is often seen wearing a large pair of headphones during Linkin Park's live performances. These headphones, designed by Delson and Mike Shinoda, evolve with each album release, becoming a symbol of their creative process. Delson has hinted that the headphones help him enter a personal "matrix" while performing, though he remains vague about what this "matrix" entails. He typically avoids giving a straightforward explanation for his choice of gear, offering responses like, "If I tell you, I'll have to have sex with you." In a more serious conversation, Mike Shinoda revealed that the headphones are actually designed for hearing protection, particularly in loud environments. Afterward, Delson hands them off to Mike, who customizes them with unique sticker designs, adding a personal touch to each pair.

Personal Life[]

Delson is Jewish and has been open about his cultural heritage. He married Elisa Delson on September 16, 2003, in a private ceremony, and the couple has one son, Jonah Taylor, born on March 25, 2008. Outside of his music career, Delson is active in philanthropy; since 2005, he has supported Little Kids Rock—a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and lessons to children in public schools—and serves as an honorary board member.
